Opposed to Publicly Funding the Panthers? Speak Out!

On Monday, April 22, Charlotte City Council will vote on a proposal to grant $87.5 million of public money towards the Carolina Panthers’ plan to renovate Bank of America Stadium.

The official Charlotte Tea Party (CAUTION) position on this falls in line with each and every other attempt by government to provide public funding to private, for profit, business. We stand in opposition.

Join us on Monday night from 5:00pm until 6:30pm for an abbreviated weekly CAUTION meeting at the Dilworth Neighborhood Grille. We will leave early to make it to the Government Center in time to attend the meeting. Please call the Clerks office at 704-336-2248 or visit THIS LINK to sign up to speak. We need as many as we can get!

Contrary to the talking points of the other side, spending on sports teams and arenas does not provide a significant economic impact.

According to a study by Sports economist Brad Humphreys, “As sport and stadium related activities increase, other spending declines because people substitute spending on sports for other spending. If the stadium simply displaces dollar-for-dollar spending that would have occurred otherwise, there are no net benefits generated.”

There are dozens of independent studies that confirm these findings.

Please join us, and please share this invite with your friends. It is short notice, but we need a presence as we continue to build our organization into one that will have impact with decision makers.

  • Let’s face it, most of theCharlotte area pols that moved this forward own PSLs worth a few hundred dollars to a few 1000 dollars apiece. If the big cat moves the PSLs are worth nothing. I have heard that the big cat refers to PSLs as the Permanent Sucker List- they may have a point

  • I’d like to see a report on saturday night hotel occupancy before and after the football season. That should show No one is driving miles and miles from outside the smsa to see a football game.

  • I oppose the city giving the team any money let alone a tax break. Jerry made a decision along time ago to make a investment in a NFL Team/Stadium in Charlotte. Some may thank him for it and some may not. I think Mr. Richardson is a seasoned business man and has achieved a great return on his investment. I dont think the Panthers bring huge tax revenues to Charlotte 6 Sundays of the year. By game 7 & 8 they are usually out of the playoffs and the games are not attended well. I personally stopped going a few years ago when the product was very poor with no signs of improving. If the reports are true that our city attorney was talked into “the panthers may move away from Charlotte” with a few phone calls from the Richardson camp thats terrible. The people that come to Panther games buy their food in their cites and bring it to the tailgate. The only thing they leave in Charlotte is their trash and usually their love of the game. A great business move by the team to get our city to cave in to their “needs” at a time when resources are low. Our city council really needs to look in the mirror when discussing issues like this one. Our state took about 3 days and said NO with pretty good authority when the Big Cat asked them to pony up.
