NCDOT To Hold Closed Door Meetings With Local Officials to Discuss I77 Tolls

Aug 20, 2014   //   by Christian Hine   //   Carolinas, Char-Meck Beat, Christian Hine  //  6 Comments

NCDOT and Cintra, the private company selected to operate the proposed toll lanes on I-77, will be holding a series of closed-door meetings with elected officials from the Lake Norman towns. The meetings will be held Thursday, August 21, 2014. Times and locations are as follows:

10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at Mooresville Town Hall
1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. at Davidson Town Hall
3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. at Water Treatment Plant in Huntersville

In order to circumvent NC open meeting laws, no more than two commissioners at any one time may attend a session.

“This closed-door secrecy characterizes the entire process,” said Kurt Naas, a spokesman for Widen I-77. “If the contract is a done deal, why are meetings still held in secret? Clearly this is not as buttoned up as we have been led to believe.”

In an attempt to shine a light on the issue, Widen I-77 has submitted FOIA requests to all of the Lake Norman towns for all correspondence pertaining to the meetings.

“We believe the public has the right to know the details of a public contract between a public agency using public land,” added Vince Winegardner, also with Widen I-77. “This secrecy reinforces our contention that I-77 tolls are not about transportation solutions but rather private benefit at public expense.”

More information to come as the FOIA requests are received.

  • Maybe this is self-evident to others, but if these are secret, closed door meetings, how did Widen-I77 come across this information? I didn’t see a link to any external site above.

    • We were told by friendly commissioners. That they are happening isn’t secret as far as I know. What they discuss is. Public and press not allowed.

  • Here is a little more color on how this is done. It has become a pattern with this project and a very clear indication that NCDOT is in charge and not our local elected officials.

The info about these meetings was sent to several local media mainstream media outlets as well. Will they do their jobs and show up to report on them? Doubtful!

Mushroom Alert: LKN Officials to Meet with NCDOT & Cintra in “Private Meetings” on I77 HOT Lanes

  • DavidsonNews.net is reporting that NCDOT opened the meetings at the last minute. Couldn’t stand the heat of citizens and reporters standing outside I guess.

  • This boondoggle brought to you by Thom Tillis, Phil Berger, Pat McCrory and Karl Rove.

    • Forgot to add…For the benefit of their very generous donors.
