Numbers Don’t Lie

It may be months before Halloween, but there is a fiend hiding in plain sight just waiting to pounce on the uninformed American citizen.  That fiend is dressed as an entitlement monster, and that monster is about to attack.

Thanks to House Guest Frank Hill for providing some charts courtesy of the Congressional Budget Office.  In plain as day, easy to understand visual elegance, there is no mistaking that runaway entitlement spending and debt are soon to overpower the US economy.

Hang on folks, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

  • I am beginning to think that without a balanced budget Amendment, we are not going to get a handle on this problem. Even with it we will probably need to phase in the numbers over several years.

  • No spending is “mandatory”. Congress can change the law at any time.

    • You are absolutely correct from the big picture perspective. The graphs are merely refering to mandatory spending as the law now stands. Clearly Congress does need to change the law!
Similarly, I always got bugged at the local level when politicians made statements like “the hotel/motel tax money can only be used for XYZ”. Nonsense! All the money ends up in the same pot. The politicians can spend it as they wish. There is ultimately only one “revenue stream”…the taxpayers pocket!
