The North Carolina Council of State participated in a public ceremonial inauguration in Raleigh on January 12.  Following the individual swearings in, Governor McCrory gave his inaugural speech.  Here is the video.

*Sorry that it’s a bit shaky…I couldn’t use a tripod or stand where I was seated.

  • I find one part of the political situation with Pat McCrory being elected governor extraordinarily humourous. Locally some of the very right wing of the Republican party didn’t think Pat was conservative enough for them, so they didn’t have anything to do with him. Now Pat is working with Art Pope, even put him on his staff, because Mr. Pope did support him. Mr. Pope is fiscally conservative enough for me and obviously thinks Pat is good enough to work with and for. But the local right wing of the R party, who didn’t work with or support him, who could have been right there in the mix, but chose not to be, is left out in the cold.

    • Maybe the folks in Charlotte who opposed light rail and taxpayer money to build stadiums are less concerned with receiving political patronage jobs than they are standing up for what they believe in. Ever consider that?

    • Name ONE instance where a proposal to give a big pile of money to the uptown mafia was presented and McCrory came out in opposition. ONE.

  • I trust that McCrory will do some good things for NC, but he clearly needs to be pressured from the Right. I don’t believe that in his core he is a true limited government conservative. There are far too many instances where he has strayed from belief in a restrained government.
To that point, there are several instances in this speech where he mentions the desire to have the government “work with you in partnerships”. (13:10 mark)
At the 15:16 mark he says in Charlotte he “emphasized teamwork and we got things done”.

Perhaps I’m just over analyzing and reading too much into this, but I really get scared when I listen to talk of “public private partnerships”. This usually means some well-intentioned but otherwise poorly planned project will be handed a sum of taxpayer money. Making it worse, these projects are often on behalf of billion dollar enterprises that could afford to make the investment themselves.

I for one do not ever want to “partner” with government. I don’t want government “on my team”. I want to be left alone and free to succeed and fail on my own. Frankly, the government usually causes a lot more harm than good when it tries to “help”.

I wish McCrory luck, and perhaps Art Pope will help keep him in check, but when he reverts to his big spending and government increasing ways, we’re going to have to be prepared to loudly and forcefully tell him “no”.

    • EXACTLY – its the same issue Lewis and I spar on frequently – just because Govco is feeding your ox doesn’t mean it is Govco’s job to feed it – because if Goveco is feeding your ox, citizens who don’t benefit from your ox paid for the feed corn. Same thing when Govco decides to gore said ox – it might be killing a family pet. 🙂

    • Can you provide contact info for McCrory and eahc of his staff members? Thanks!

  • McCrory is a place holder. My eyes are on Dan Forest for the state we really want.

    • Here here!

      • Um, or is it hear hear!? Oh forget it. Ditto.

        • Here! Hear?
