Rep. Robert Brawley: My Concerns About the Senate Race‏

Apr 21, 2014   //   by Christian Hine   //   Carolinas, Christian Hine  //  32 Comments

*State Representative Robert Brawley from Iredell County circulated the following letter on Friday afternoon regarding the current Senate primary:

Robert Brawley

Robert Brawley

Which Thom Tillis are you supporting?

Republicans have a number of qualified leaders and the NC General Assembly has served North Carolina well. While I would like to thank Thom Tillis for the benefits he has helped with and while I appreciate the good accomplished, I regret the lack of input from the body as a whole. We could have helped head off the challenges we will have this fall. Following is a list of issues the democrats will have a field day with and could quite possibly hurt the number of Republicans we have in the general assembly if Thom Tillis is our senate candidate. We must ask ourselves:

Which Thom is he?

1) The Thom that favors free-enterprise or the Thom that passes legislation giving a fellow legislator’s family a monopoly business in North Carolina. This is not only unconstitutional (as ruled by judge) but also unethical and a total disregard for rule of law and the rest of the people in North Carolina. At the time the bill was passed the Department of Insurance certified more than one company as qualified to teach the course work.

2) The Thom that favors competition and free enterprise or the Thom that passes legislation that restricts the broadband companies that compete with Time Warner? Again, questionable ethics especially when you consider the campaign contributions resulting and for certain a conflict. Thom restricted city owned broadband because cities have an unfair advantage, so he says, not true. But he also favors public/private partnerships unless they compete with his friends.

2a) Thom says he favors Public/Private partnerships yet his reason for the restriction on the city owned broadband partnerships is that they allow unfair competition. Thom which is it, do you know where you are on this issue of free enterprise? Or is the one you pick the ones that deserves the benefit? Does the $39,000 campaign contribution from Time Warner affect your decision?

3) The Thom who told the Truckers Association “I do not want any toll corridors in North Carolina” or the Thom that champions toll lanes on I-77? Thom says they are not toll lanes but Hot Lanes. They still charge a toll. Toll’em Thom which is it? Hot Toll lanes?

4) The Thom that says he favors open government yet he fires a chair of finance (me) for not agreeing with him. Thom has occasionally snapped at members and visitors who disagree with him. It was also suggested to Thom’s inner circle to start rumors questioning my mental health. Is that bullying?

5) The Thom that is ethical? Read the article in the N&O about the board of governors. Why did Thom sell the seats on the board of governors? Unethical and a violation of the law. Do we need more or is there a question about what Thom really stands for other than his own advancement. The caucus voted three times on our choice for the board of governors. Thom’s friends were left off so Thom recessed the assembly, called a caucus and handed out a list of his six friends he said, due to campaign commitments, needed to be on the board. (Jim Black, Patrick Cannon, and Thom Tillis.)

6) The Thom that says he supports small business or the Thom that pushed a tax package that taxes every business making less than $225,000 per year and cuts taxes on any company making more than $225,000. If your company makes only $50,000 profit this year you will pay an additional $2,700 in taxes to North Carolina.

7) In the paper recently, Thom says he looks forward to a debate and touting his record. Will it be his record of accomplishment or will he be willing to answer the questions about issues he disagrees with? Which is it Thom? And why have you spent this campaign raising money rather than attending the Republican forums? I believe most Republicans will pull behind our candidate this fall but we are also important the rest of the year. Hopefully votes are as important as money.

We need to defeat Kay Hagen this fall but we need to make transparent decisions in the primary.

Together We Can!

  • Well, the snakes are certainly turning on one another. Do any of you wing nuts have a single redeeming quality? No question Thom Tillis is a sleezy, underhanded slime-ball. But didn’t you partner with that carpetbagger Bob Rucho to steal the Charlotte Airport Representative Brawley? Didn’t you also vote to take Asheville’s water and sewer and give it to surrounding counties? And didn’t you vote to raise taxes on the poorest while cutting taxes on the wealthiest? Didn’t you vote for larger class sizes and giving tax dollars to private, for profit charter school companies run by friends and relatives of legislators?

The pot can’t call the kettle black with any credibility. As far as those of us that know how to think are concerned, none of you crazies should be legislating, and some you should be in prison. Especially Tillis and Rucho.

    • I think you are accusing the wrong Brawley. There are 2, this one is from Iredell County.

    • Once again Zon, short of the facts – understand the difference between Robert and Bill !!!

  • Tillis is the face of the Legislature. Moral Mondays is a specific voter activation campaign designed and pining for Tillis to win the primary. Eliminate one and the other falls flat.
Personally I see Tillis joining the Boyz Club in DC. McCain and Lindsy have a green jacket cut for him already.
    I’m done with establishment types.
I want someone that knows the rules, why they were written and how to use them to impede this slide towards socialist mediocrity.
    I’m voting for Greg Brannon

  • Be sure to not confuse Robert Brawley with Bill Brawley. Bill Brawley (not Robert) was leading the airport takeover deal.

  • In an effort at being transparent, I wish Rep. Brawley would have included the name of the candidate he’ll be voting for in the upcoming primary.

This “letter” is nothing more than a rehash of his committee resignation letter from a few months ago. I will say, however, I agreed with his point #1 then and I agree with it now and I am glad it raised awareness about this issue. You can read more about Senate Bill 738 and the granting of an unconstitutional monopoly by the NCGA at the links below, or just search for “NC Bail Academy lawsuit.”

    1) http://projects.newsobserver.com/under_the_dome/judge_grants_injunction_for_bail_bondsmen_training_firm

    2) From the NCICL – http://ncicl.org/litigation/34

But, to be fair to Speaker Tillis, he did not vote on this piece of legislation according to the legislative history of Senate Bill 738, and it was passed overwhelmingly by both house of the NCGA:

    http://www.ncleg.net/gascripts/BillLookUp/BillLookUp.pl?Session=2011&BillID=S738&votesToView=all

And, more importantly, Rep. Robert Brawley DID vote in favor of this unconstitutional legislation. So, back to transparency, why does Rep. Robert Brawley not include this fact in the letter above? Does this mean Rep. Robert Brawley is also in favor of state sanctioned monopolies?

  • Brannon told Glenn Beck that he (Brannon) would win the primary without a runoff. Therefore Tillis is through!

No need to concentrate on Tillis but spend time helping Brannon defeat Hagan in the general election.

  • […] Well, here we are in late April, and Speaker Thom is locked in a very tight GOP primary for US Senate.  Brawley has taken the opportunity to release a letter raising questions about Tillis, the top official in his chamber: […]

    • please, just clearly make your point – just make your accusation already.

      • J., That is what’s referred to as a “trackback”. It’s a comment automatically left when a link to this story appears on another website. In this case, the Daily Haymaker picked this up. You can read their take by clicking on the title link.

  • Well, he is a Rove candidate!

  • The Tillis that favors “immigration reform” or the Tillis that gutted NC’s e-verify law making it a more desirable place for illegal aliens?

  • This all coming from a guy who introduced a bill allowing legislators to accept gifts from lobbyists.

And the genius doesn’t even know how to spell Sen Hagan’s name properly. Cute.

  • If ever there were a turncoat RINO in NC government, it is Tillis. i am making it a point to tell friends and family to NOT vote for him. He has to be held accountable for his true record. Tillis is not representing the best interest of real conservatives. Look at his record – don’t believe what he says, look at what and who is backing him!

  • Not that I put too much stock in polls (especially PPP) but one number on Tillis is a huge flashing red light that has gone unreported: though he has 60% name recognition, his negative split is ~22/38. Assuming you don’t render an opinion if you haven’t heard of someone, Tillis’ negatives are a staggering 63% of those who have heard of him. Perhaps Rep Brawley has hit upon some of the reasons why.

  • Dr. Greg Brannon, the ONLY candidate who can quote the Constitution, is CLEARLY the emerging LEADER that NC NEEDS at THIS time !!! Brannon
will owe ‘nothing to nobody’ and THAT my friends is EXACTLY WHAT WE NEED !!! We need a NONpolitician, not a vulgar republicannot.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE cast your vote for http://www.gregbrannon.com

  • For the record. Representative Brawley was not trying to accept gifts from lobbyist. He was trying to highlight the large waste of taxpayer money which is that Cash Cow fondly known as the state ethics commission. Check your facts!

  • I wonder for whom Rep. Brawley will be voting? (Zon let me translate that for you- who Brawley be voting for?) In point #2-the city owned broadband partnerships to which Brawley refers is the M-I Connection. It was a debacle which transferred $120,000,000 from the tax payers in Davidson and Mooresville to the Adelphia bankruptcy estate. It has crippled Davidson financially and Mooresville took a big hit as well. All of this was done without the consent of the voters/taxpayers in either town. Does Brawley think MI was a good thing for the towns? All Tillis was trying to do, is in the future prevent taxpayers in small towns like Davidson from being victimized by stupid wide eyed town officials (see Mayor John Woods of Davidson)
as they are taken in by conmen selling worthless cable TV systems. I guess Brawley supports having the taxpayers of Mooresville (his constituents) taking a $120,000,000 kick in the balls. And you Keepers Of Odd Knowledge take Brawley seriously? When you folks are in Davidson tomorrow night for the debate, if you should cross paths with any Davidson taxpayers- ask them what they think about “city owned broadband” that Brawley is so enthusiastic about. Speaking of Davidson- am looking forward to the debate tomorrow night. 4 entries- Speaker, preacher, nurse and conman. Hope the conman stands up for himself and does not hide like he did at his trial. Mr. and Mrs. Bubak- no need to record it, the media will get it all down.

    • Actually what Brawley is trying to do now is give MI Connection a fighting chance against TWC so that some day it may reach profitability (don’t hold your breath). The town boards, not the NCGA, voted to go into the cable business.

Both Huntersville Mayor Jill Swain and Davidson Mayor John Woods were huge proponents of going into the cable business when they were commissioners. They were both subsequently voted mayors. They both support toll lanes on I-77. We get the government we deserve.

      • actually, no this legislation has no effect on M-I what so ever. It’s intent and effect is to prevent towns from making the mistake Davidson/Mooresville did, Nice try though Hope- You are right about one thing Hope- the idiots in Davidson keep electing Woods.

  • Whoever posted the comment using the name Steve Bubak should stop using a false name that could be confused with a real person. My husband Jeff and I strongly support Robert Brawley and did not post the statement above from a “Steve Bubak”.

  • So I get three thumbs down, but no actual replies from the Anti-Tillis/Robert Brawley supporters here at PunditHouse care to my comment above? I’ll give Christian a pass since he’s busy working. Robert Brawley voted in favor of the same legislation he is using to attempt to paint Speaker Tillis as unethical and anti-free enterprise. This type of blatant hypocrisy should be denounced and ridiculed.

    • Don’t you know that any criticism of a candidate preferred by the followers of Ron Paul or praise of their opponents makes you amathema! Be gone evil servant of Darkness.

  • […] a scathing open letter on Friday, state Rep. Robert Brawley (R) picks out seven issues he thinks Democrats will use to […]

  • Since Mr. Brawley is no doubt aware of the confusion that sometimes occurs between himself and the “other” Representative Brawley, he should know that “Time Warner” is a separate company from Time Warner Cable.

  • As of now, I am still voting for Brannon. Tillis may win on name recognition and more signs.

  • The UNC Board of Governors is a volunteer position. So Tillis “rewarded” some generous people who had contributed to his campaign with the opportunity to be as generous with their time as they were with their money, by serving in time-consuming unpaid board positions.

That’s public service in the truest sense. It disgusts me that some people try to twist it into something bad, and pretend that there’s something questionable about it. Operatives with two of the other campaigns have done that, so far, and they ought to be ashamed of themselves.

    • Cmon Dave you know they are getting tax payer funded Coffee, doughnuts, Soda, and cold cuts at these meetings.

    • So what Dave is really saying here is that is that the positions are for sale and you too can be appointed to a board if you give enough money to the right people. Nice.

  • My vote is for Mr. Greg Brannon! Doctor Brannon will lead the fight to: Fully repeal OBAMACARE
Lower Taxes and Balance The Budget
    End Job Killing Regulations
    Secure The Border
    Protect The Unborn
    Defend The 2nd Amendment

    • I can envision the Soros funded ads against Brannon now. The Democrat Judge has done his duty and Hagen and her Coven will take advantage.

  • Wow.. I had no idea Brawley is a Republican. I thought he was a Democrat ripping a Republican front runner. But I have heard of this guy Bralwy as a very ethical and stand up guy that does alot for our community in Troutman. He is very approachable and haven’t heard a negative about him from people who have spoken about him. I was going to vote for Tillis but HELL NO after what I just read. Wow, this guy Tillis must not be good news if a nice guy like Brawley would write a letter like that. And it comes across as facts as opposed to rhetoric for a change. Talk about a guy who has courage to stand up against the establishment. We need more leaders like this guy but don’t worry the republicans will probably find a way to get rid of him. Wish he would run for senate.
