Rhodes Calls for Tillis to Step Down Pending Investigation

Mar 21, 2014   //   by Christian Hine   //   Carolinas, Christian Hine  //  21 Comments

Former Representative John Rhodes stepped back into the political fray today at a press conference he called in Cornelius, NC.  Rhodes read from a prepared statement and didn’t take followup questions from the media.  He did suggest that more information was to come.  (The linked statement also includes supporting documents.)

Among his talking points he called for a formal investigation into the “pay for play” politics regarding Speaker Tillis’ appointments to the UNC Board of Governors.

“Tomorrow, I will send a request to the State Board of Elections to fully investigate the matter and the state’s Attorney General to determine if any ethical lapses have occurred or laws have been broken. I will additionally send a complaint to the Legislative Ethics committee to fully investigate the matter concerning the appointments to the UNC Board of Governors in relation to campaign contributions and other legislation channeled through the House of Representatives” said Rhodes.

He further called on Tillis to step down from his post as Speaker and cease his Senate campaign during such time as the investigation is underway.

“Legislators need to understand that the people’s legislature is not their personal political ATM for campaign cash at the time of their choosing” said Rhodes.

He also called for those who have been “bullied or intimidated” by the Speaker, especially elected officials,  to step forward and stand up en masse.  Rhodes suggested that “Not to speak is to speak.  Not to act is to act.”.

“If you are a member of the legislature and you see wrong doing by legislative leaders, you have the obligation to speak out about it regardless of whether your supposed leadership likes it or not.  If they don’t like it, you tell them to take a hike!  Remind them you serve your constituents, the people first.”

  • This certainly falls right in line with Mr. Tillis’ refusal to meet with the constituents of NC over these past several months. He has refused attendance at Senate Candidate forums to and answer questions from voters. He refused to attend any of the Defund Obamacare Townhalls he was invited to last fall. In some cases he never even responded to the invites. He expects to walk into the job as US Senator without interviewing for the job. Is this the behavior of a “Bully”? I would say absolutely. He has ignored the people of this great State and we will not forget on May 6.

    • He has also totally ignored again ” his constituents ” over the proposed toll thru the Lake Community. Please don’t anyone say we can ‘pay’ to use it. The plans are for entry only at Exit 19 and 30. Parson’s Brinkerhoff Consulting said it ” would not decrease traffic” only give those willing to pay a congestion free experience” So, if you live at exit 28 and need to get to the hospital ? You figure it out. If he doesn’t listen to us now believe me when he gets to D.C. he won’t either.

  • Well it took longer than I thought, but the snakes in the pit have finally started turning on their own. Inevitable really. Popcorn anyone?

    • If you think that John Rhodes considers Thom Tillis one of his own, you REALLY haven’t been paying attention. Aside from all the philosophical differences, Rhodes is Unaffiliated, while Tillis is (technically) a Republican.

    • At least bunch of p—-…um, perfidious, pusillanimous praetorians when it comes to policing our own.

  • First we have seen or heard from Mr. Rhodes in Cornelius in 8 years. Most voters in Cornelius saw his real estate office close, and he just dropped from sight after losing his last election by a 2-1 margin. Rhodes embarrassed himself and the town of Cornelius today. Wonder if Rhodes was paid for this event today. If Ponzi Brannon was the one that paid him, I hope he got cash! Maybe he wants to see Hagan reelected, is Rhodes pro abortion?

    • How many folks that post here actually lived in the district that Rhodes represented?

      • I did.

        • You are the only one Christian. Do you think that Mr. Rhoides is so bitter at his 2-1 defeat at the hands of Tillis 8 years ago, that he would rather Hagan and Obama retain the senate than see tills take hagans seat? If so sad.

          • Your logic is confusing. After years of being humble in defeat, Rhodes finally had to come out of the shadows due to the egregious history of corruption Tillis has assembled in his short time as Speaker.
I don’t understand how you can make the connection that he somehow supports Hagan, unless you are under the misguided impression that only Tillis can beat Hagan. In fact, Tillis has one of the worst possible chances of victory against her. If you want to beat Hagan, you must get behind another candidate.

      • So lets run a stock con man against Hagan, Christian would you invest any of your hard earned money in a company that Greg Brannon was promoting and managing. Why did Rhodes lose 2-1 when he ran against Tillis in 2006? Did you sees the WRAL (3/19) poll? Tillis 28 Ponzi 15 Ms. Grant 11 Phelps/Harris 6. Christian you need to get a 4th job so you can send more of your hard earned money to Ponzi’s campaign, Step it up, Christian, Ponzi is counting on you. Give till it hurts. Ponzi needs a new Rolex

        • Yes, I would invest in a company that Greg was promoting after having done my due diligence and with the full understanding that investment comes with risk of loss. Greg is a good man with a long history of helping others. He would not purposefully mislead people for personal gain.

I’m looking forward to spending more money on him next Friday at the speedway club in Concord so I can meet Sen Mike Lee, who has endorsed Brannon and now even after fully vetting the ridiculous court case still wants to travel to NC to campaign for him.

        • Brannon wins big in GOP straw poll

          http://www.blueridgenow.com/article/20140323/ARTICLES/140329948

“The Henderson County straw poll is the fourth such victory for Brannon. Last weekend, he swept all three straw polls conducted in Davidson, Durham and Moore counties.”

    • Unfortunately it is baseless, groundless, mean-spirited attacks like these that prevent many from standing up. Rhodes had nothing to gain from this except expose himself to vicious personal attacks like these.

Though I may or may not agree with what Rhodes had to say, I applaud him for standing up and saying it.

  • Many thanks for the excellent writeup. It was the excitement bill that. Appearance complex to help considerably increased pleasant by you! Mind you, exactly how could possibly we continue a new messages?

    • Turing Test FAIL.

  • Captain Courageous refused to take questions???

He might be right about Tillis, but not to take questions is to cower.

  • […] on Friday Thom Tillis’s old opponent for the NC98 legislative seat – John Rhodes – unloaded a barrage of ethical questions about the Speaker from Cornelius Town Hall.  Tillis supporters dismiss this […]
