Vinroot Endorses…

Aug 27, 2013   //   by Christian Hine   //   Char-Meck Beat, Christian Hine  //  19 Comments

The following is just a quick observation I made the other day when peaking through the websites of our local City Council candidates.

Remember the old Sesame Street song “One of these things is not like the other”?

Well, as I was panning through the list of endorsements for At-Large Democrat candidate Vi Alexander Lyles, I noticed something a little off kilter.

Play along with me.

Which of these endorsements is not like the others?

A) Mel Watt

B) Parks Helms

C) Jennifer Roberts

D) Richard Vinroot

Ding Ding!  If you guessed letter “D”, then you win a prize.

That’s right, former Republican Mayor and former Republican candidate for Governor Richard Vinroot is listed among the who’s who of local Democrats that have endorsed this first time candidate.

Now this certainly isn’t a knock on Ms. Lyles.  By all means collect all the endorsements you can when running for office.

The situation just reminds me of the sheer audacity so many moderate/establishment Republicans have.  We Conservatives are seemingly always lectured about “Party loyalty” and that fealty to the great and powerful “R” should always come before philosophical or personal differences with candidates.  We are scolded for simply not publicly endorsing candidates of our Party with whom we disagree.

I wonder what the same “R” loyalists will say to a prominent member of their Party who has now gone so far as to endorse a “D”ark sider?  Does he get a pass for being a moderate himself?  Has his absence from electoral politics in recent years cleared his path to such boldness?

Frankly, in the name of intellectual freedom, he is also free to endorse whomever he chooses.

I’d just like to know this:

Which Republican candidate running is he throwing under the bus?

  • The link to PH from the CO has the caption – ‘Why is Vinroot Endorsing a Republican’ – BAHAAAA

    • Doh! Thanks for the heads up. I just wrote our editor there. Does sort of change the focus of the piece, doesn’t it!

  • So, Mayor Vinroot has gone from being a special guest who swore in the first group of CAUTION officers (even going as far as saying that we were Un-Common Americans and should be applauded) – to now endorsing a Democratic candidate that I would assume would have a different opinion of our local Tea Party organization.

I’m disappointed, but not entirely surprised.

    • News for you, aligning with the Tea Party in Charlotte is a political liability, even in the primaries.

      • Yes, huge liability. We have our founder sitting on the county commission. The horror!

        • The operative word there is County. Bill James couldn’t get elected to dog catcher outside District 6. Most folks in Charlotte think he’s an embarrassment.

          • Bill James isn’t the founder – I’ll let you research to find out who is.

          • But with that said Dennis, I guess Bill is another example of an elected official that has won election with Tea Party support…primary and general. So that’s two. Yes, Bill can be his own worst enemy sometimes with how he phrases things, but he is right a lot more than he isn’t.

      • Being any type of Republican in the general election outside of district elections is a big liability due to current community demographics.

  • Richard has long been a contributor to Planned Parenthood, and a RINO personified. The power structure in charlotte has alway been most comfortable around light skinned blacks- they prefer ‘red bones’, always have always will

  • Vinroot has been helping District 6 city council candidate Kate Payerle. She also works for him at Robinson, Bradshaw & Hinton. Better make sure the voters in District 6 of Charlotte are aware of this. City council already leans way too far left & we don’t need a RINO or servant of Vinroot representing District 6.

    • I am a conservative in District 6 … new to the area… who is the best candidate? Please advise.

  • Perish the thought a politician endorsing with his conscience over his party affiliation. I thought that’s what we wanted from them. Go figure.

    • Dude, read my post. He is completely in his right to endorse whomever he likes. My point is moreso to those that criticize we conservatives when we don’t automatically support the R. Will they equally criticize Vinroot for endorsing the other side? If not, double standard?

      • The comment was intended to be an endorsement.

      • I am a conservative in District 6 … new to the area… who is the best candidate? Please advise.

    • Explain the conscience of the democrat party. Without using other peoples money.

  • As a Republican Party officer and activist in Charlotte in the 1970’s, I know Richard Vinroot is a certified RINO.

    • I am a conservative in District 6 … new to the area… who is the best candidate? Please advise.
